Rob's Interview with Nova (Brazil) - Scans and Translation
There’s tension in the air. When Robert Pattinson enters the hotel room in Los Angeles, everyone is silent. Taller than I imagined and with grayish blue eyes more pervasive than I anticipated, he soon breaks the ice with a rather shy - but totally sexy - smile. And he excuses himself for a minute to check his dog in the next room. Hi? Pattinson comes back apologizing. "He’s just so young and isn’t used to my tight schedule yet," he says, jokingly. "Now, yes, we can start." The lucky puppy is Bear, a mutt, a mix of German shepherd and some(s) other(s) breed(s), he adopted in a public shelter in Los Angeles. It’s a low blow.
This Taurus guy, who’s about to turn 25 years old, seems to have matured since he started doing the vampire Edward Cullen, in Twilight. "While filming 'Water for Elephants' I felt confident. I’m no longer terrified with the possibility of making mistakes," he says, referring to the film that hits theaters April 29, in which he plays a circus veterinarian and stars steamy scenes with Reese Witherspoon, 34. Moreover, in other movie, Bel Ami, release due to October, he is paired with Uma Thurman, 40. Acting with older women is different? "The age doesn’t matter, both in movies and in real life. I think." Pattinson grew up in a house with three women (his mother and older sisters, Lizzie and Victoria), and his father. But he says he was never pampered and that he wasn’t successful with girls. Until he was 13 years old, he attended an all boys’ school. "My contact with girls came down to the friends of my sisters - and, obviously, they didn’t want a boy 12 year-old boy around".
Sitting in front of me, he puts his feet over the coffee table and crosses his arms over his knees. Although he’s considered one of the most handsome, influential and well paid actors in the world, he does everything to look like a normal guy. "This sex symbol story is totally irrelevant. I don’t think that is an interesting aspect in an actor’s life and it certainly isn’t an enduring factor. You may be considered sexy for a year, maybe two - but it fades away, and only actors who actually have something the show will stick around," he says. "Of course, looks can open doors. But it’s important to focus on getting interesting jobs and build a base."
Pattinson gestures a lot while speaking and, as soon as he turns ideas into words, he opens his arms and leans against the couch, expanding his shoulders. Still, he can’t hide his reserved Englishman style. Maybe that's why the informality of Brazilian people (mainly Brazilian girls) caught him by surprise. The actor went to Rio de Janeiro to shoot Breaking Dawn scenes. "We were shooting on the street and suddenly several girls who were extras came to talk to me, try to hold me... I continued working because I didn’t know if it was part of the scene or not. The crew began to laugh. Later, my security guard said he wouldn’t intervene because he ‘noticed I was enjoying it' [laughs]. I've never seen anything like it. They’re a totally uninhibited and lovely people." When I wonder if Kristen Stewart, Bella from Twilight, feels jealous, he frowns with a smile: "I think we should concentrate on the movie I’m here to promote" Still, he adds that the only downside of fame is having to hide. "Nothing stresses me. But when I began to notice that there’s always someone following me, with an unfriendly expression, I learned to protect myself."
So much harassment makes no sense to him. "Deep down, it’s a matter of luck. You work in several movies and nothing. Suddenly, many people like one, and... boom! It turns your life upside down. But with recognition comes the need to prove that you deserve it, especially in my case, since I haven’t done so many movies to conquer this position." To get there, he’s extremely focused on his career. "I want to prove that I can be an extraordinary actor."
Rob's Q & A from the 'Water For Elephant' press conference
The drama Water for Elephants, based on the acclaimed best-selling novel of the same name and opening in theaters on April 22nd, tells the story of a veterinary student, named Jacob Jankowski (Robert Pattinson), whose entire life changes when his parents die in an accident and he ends up jumping a random train that happens to belong to the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. Once he is discovered, he is put to work with the animals, where he meets the circus’ shining star, Marlena (Reese Witherspoon), and her charismatic husband August (Christoph Waltz), the often violent and abusive owner. This magical world serves as the backdrop for an epic tale of forbidden love, between two individuals hoping for a second chance at happiness.At the film’s press day, actor Robert Pattinson talked about the impression the novel made on him, his affinity for the time period of the 1930s, working alongside an elephant as a co-star, and how he personally identified with his character’s journey. Question: What was the impression you got from reading the book that made you want to do a film adaptation?
ROBERT PATTINSON: I think I’ve just always had a bit of an affinity for that era. I always wanted to do a movie around that time. And, I think it was just very solid, how she (author Sara Gruen) created the world there. I just wanted to be a part of it.
How did you approach becoming a person from another time?
PATTINSON: There was a comprehensive creation of the world. I’ve never worked on anything so detailed. There was an embankment with a train track on the top. All the trailers were on one side, and then the circus world was on the other. Once you walked over the tracks, there would be a camera, but that was the only thing from the 21st Century. You could stand on the tracks and look over at everything, and you were in the ‘30s. We were out in the middle of the desert in Fillmore, and there was nothing else around. There was an orchard. We were in the ‘30s. Jack Fisk, the production designer, used authentic pegs and the ropes. Every single thing which built the world was all totally real. And, authentic period underpants do actually help, as well. I actually wore them every single day. Jacqueline West, the costume designer, was unbelievable. Almost everything was real. Every pair of jeans were all from the ‘20s and ‘30s. It was crazy.
What do you love so much, about that time period?
PATTINSON: There’s a wildness to it. I think that’s why I like that period. After that, it’s just white picket fences. It just gets progressively more boring. But, it’s the end of the Wild West. It’s why kids still want to be cowboys, even in England.
What was it like to work with Tai, the elephant, especially in the beginning?
PATTINSON: I wasn’t scared at all. There was only one moment, when we first saw the whole herd together and Gary, Tai’s trainer said, “Sit,” literally as if he were talking to a dog, and it sat down in exactly the same way a dog would. Just seeing that, it’s totally incomprehensible. I basically decided to do the movie, at that point. I hadn’t read the script or anything. It’s very powerful to think that you can have a relationship with these huge beasts.
It’s been said that the elephant took quite a liking to you. How does an elephant flirt?
PATTINSON: I don’t know who started that. I’ve been asked about it all day. It sounds really disturbing. I wasn’t flirting with the elephant. I think I had a relationship with the elephant, but it was based purely on candy. I strategically placed mints. I’d suck a peppermint for a bit, and then stick it onto my body, under my armpits and covering my entire chest, and not tell anyone. So, every single time, the elephant would be constantly sniffing me and I’d be like, “I don’t know, she just really likes me. It’s crazy!” But, I think she was just sniffing around for a treat.
In the film, your character Jacob lies about being a vet to get a job in the circus. Have you ever lied to get an acting job?
PATTINSON: Oh, yeah, all the time. I don’t know if there’s the same thing in America, but there’s a thing called the Spotlight Form in England, where you have all your talents and accents and everything. You just tick these boxes, saying what you’re capable of, as an actor. I just tick everything. I can do any accent in the world. I can literally do any technical skill. I think it’s still like that. I ticked that I can do Lithuanian accents, fluently.
What was it like to do the kissing scenes with Reese Witherspoon, who is so much smaller than you are?
PATTINSON: It’s really easy for me. I’ve got quite bad posture and I’ve got a big, heavy head, so it just slumps down and she was in the right spot, naturally.
How was it to do the scenes where you have to shovel the animal poop?
PATTINSON: I don’t mind working with poop, at all. I have a natural propensity to work on big piles of poop. I’m very familiar with it. I don’t know why I wasn’t grossed out by it, at all. Because everything felt so authentic all the time, you just accept it, as part of the world. The scene where we were in that train car, there were like 10 billion flies. On any other movie, I think I’d be like, “Let’s just do one take!” But, I was perfectly happy to make a little mound and sit there and eat my lunch.
Did you enjoy getting to shoot some of the film in Tennessee?
PATTINSON: There was an amazing moonshine day. It was one of the best days of the shoot. Drinking moonshine in 120 degrees, half of the crew was passed out, after one sip. It was amazing!
Was there anything about Jacob Jankowski’s journey in the film that you, personally, could relate to?
PATTINSON: I don’t know. I guess I had an experience, when I did a Harry Potter film, years ago, and I was just starting to realize that I wanted to be an actor, even though I had already finished three movies, by that point. I remember being in Tokyo and looking out the window and seeing the Tokyo skyline. It made me reflect on what had happened in my life, and I was in awe of what road I had taken, by accident. In terms of being mesmerized by a girl, like he is, I guess that happens.

The fifth time I’m meeting with Robert Pattinson.
He came to the interview by himself, without any entourage. He looks like he just rolled out of the bed. “I don’t care what people think of me, even if it sounds cocky” – he says like he could hear my thoughts about his appearance. – “I don’t like to be surrounded by crowd. The more people around you, the more judgment. I don’t have stylist or publicist – I don’t need them, and I don’t have to spend my money on them…”
After his first “Twilight” movie Pattinson turned from cute star-neophyte into major male movie icon following traditions started by Rudolph Valentino, Clark Gable and now days continued by Jude Law.
When he was 12 years old, Robert started career as a model and even was a face of Britain fashion house Hackett, but now he talks about it as about the most unsuccessful career of model ever.
Robert Pattinson is one of the reasons “Twilight” movie turned into phenomenally successful franchise which seems never ends. First part of final book “Breaking Dawn” will be released at the end of 2011, the second – in 2012. But we don’t have to wait that long to see Robert on the screen – circus drama “Water for elephants” will be released in April… [Author tells about movie plot]… When this movie released, everyone, even Robert’s critiques will have to admit that his acting is supreme and the women’s idol is ready for new roles.
Does Robert consider himself a sex-symbol? He prefers to joke about it and saying that vampires are real sex-symbols because they are forever young. Robert - “I wouldn’t say that I’m a fan of vampires, but I don’t have anything against them…There is an opinion, that platonic relationships between Bella and Edward have positive influence on teenagers. Also, just think about it, as a vampire I have to apply tones of makeup – it’s so sexy! And, before Twilight I couldn’t find a girl which would agree to go on a date with me, and now everything changed! Isn’t it weird?”
I’m asking why he became an actor? R .– “Because of the girl! I fell in love and for 10 years never told her about it – and I think this is the best kind of love. I re-read recently my diaries from those times – when I finally admitted my feelings for her, she was surprised and screamed – “But you’ve talked to me only three times in ten years !”.
Because of her Pattinson started his acting. That girl was an actress in a small theater and 15-years old Robert started working in that theater but not as an actor but as a stage worker. When troop started working on play “Guys and dolls” Robert suddenly felt push to play leading role. He went to the audition and got part – not the leading one, but a Cuban dancer! “Soon, all good actors quit the theater and I got finally leading role” – Robert laughs.
When director decided to work on Thornton ‘s “Our town” play, Robert was the only actor who fitted this role because of his height. In this role Robert got noticed by his future manager. In 2003 he passed audition for “Vanity Fair”, but his scene with Reese Whitherspoon didn’t get into final cut. Robert got more luck with his next project – “Ring of Nibelungs” where he played dashing prince Zigfrid. Decision not to continue formal education and try acting career came after Robert played Cedric Diggory in “Harry Potter and Goblets of fire”, camera loved his face. Robert laughs: “I finally looked in the mirror and told myself – it’s time to start real acting!”
To change profession, seems, is family tradition. His father at one time gave up his auto service business and started to write music. From his childhood Robert has been in love with Jimmy Hendrix and Van Morrison. “When I heard live Astral Weeks, I cried for a week! I wanted badly to become a rocker. But, unlike movie industry musical industry not that forgiving – in Hollywood if you performed your job you are getting paid, it’s not always the case in music – there is no guarantee you’ll earn money.”
Now, about money. “How much do you need to feel happy?”
R. – “I’m very undemanding. I agreed to play Salvador Dali in “Little Ashes” because I wanted to spend four months in Spain. Nobody spoke English during movie production and I didn’t speak Spanish, so I had completely submerge myself into this role. I read everything I could find about Dali and his friends – Garcia Lorca and Bunuel. If Dali had been alive, I think, we could’ve been friends. This specific role brought me huge satisfaction and I’d hope to have same feeling after each role.”
“Are you happy that you uber famous and the whole world knows you?”
R. – “I don’t know what the fame is. Actor is really free when he is unknown. It’s much more difficult to find a job, but you are not under constant watching. Recently I got fond of films of Godar. So much freedom in those movies! Godar teaches you that when you feel sad, you shouldn’t look sad. His “The name Carmen” movie is the most truthful story of love. I adore hopeless love stories – both watch them and play in them. May be it’s because I’m still young”.
Robert recalls with a smile that between final shoots of “Little Ashes” and starting “Remember Me” passed three years. Now Pattinson doesn’t have any time off. Shooting “Breaking Dawn” will take six months and Robert has to live in airplanes again.
Robert stopped feeling himself British after settling in Hollywood. R.- “I’m not sure who I am any more. I live in LA and started to like it here. My family is in London, it’s much quieter there. When my sister visited me in LA, she was shocked to see me on all those covers of magazines for teenagers. I don’t talk with my family about my job. And my parents are so positive people it’s just impossible to write anything bad about them. So boring! “ – he laughs.
Robert promises me that as soon as all this noise around him goes down, he’ll play his guitar again. R. - “I gave a few concerts in LA but they were not very successful”.
Another dream – take long-long vacation. Robert recalls that after “New Moon’ was finished, he rented a house in Montepulchiano and spent all his time in hammock testing local wine.
Finally, I’m asking him last question – question which makes all girls around the world nervous – and Russia is not an exception. “Have you already met your soul mate?”
Pattinson as true English dude who knows his price answers with question:
“Do soul mates really exist? It’s very horrible to meet such soul mate when you are still young. You are changing her to fit your soul and girl is a goner! May be I’m a vampire after all?”

Reese Impressed By Rob's Tactics To Avoid Paps
Newly married Reese Witherspoon says she could learn a thing or two about fame from Water for Elephants co-star Robert Pattinson.Did she try to give him advice? "Me?!" she gasped to USA TODAY's Andrea Mandell via phone. "If anything I'd probably be asking his advice. He has, like, military tactics to avoid paparazzi. It's pretty incredible the operations that go on."
In the film (a tan!) R-Patz takes a break from hunky vampire Edward Cullen to join the Water for Elephants' 1930s-set circus. And while Reese says her kids are still too young for Twilight, the age range of fans camping out by the Water for Elephants set was unbelievable. "I've worked with a lot of people but I've never seen the amount of attention or paparazzi or just fans camped out on the edge of the set ever in my whole life," she says. "There'd be little, little girls camped out, 7-year-olds with their parents at 4 o'clock in the morning. Five o'clock in the morning we'd pull off of set - I was bleary eyed and there'd be 10 women waiting on the roof of their cars just trying to see him."

"It's that kind of romance that is about second chances," explains Reese. "Sometimes you can be in your life and sort of trapped in a circumstance that you just can't get out of, and one day someone comes along and throws you a rope and you have an opportunity at a new life."
Based on the best-selling novel by Sara Gruen, 'Water for Elephants' follows an elderly man (Hal Holbrook) reminiscing about his days working as an animal caretaker at a circus. A young veterinary school student (Robert) witnessing the beauty and brutality of life under the big top, he falls for Marlena (Reese), the captivating star performer, and suffers the wrath of her charismatic but dangerous husband, August (Christoph Waltz).

"He falls in love with her at first sight," says Robert of his character. "She just seems kind of magical to him, and she doesn't see herself as that at all. She sees herself as just like a work horse, that's it, and thinks there's no fantasy in life and all, and he just refuses to see her as anything else other than this complete fantasy figure."

Filmmaker Statement Regarding Breaking Dawn Leaks
Dear Twilight Saga fans,
As some of you may know, pictures and screen grabs of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn as a work in progress have leaked on the internet. We are extremely proud of this film and also extremely heartbroken to see it out there at this stage.
The film and these images are not yet ready or in their proper context. They were illegally obtained and their early dissemination is deeply upsetting to the actors, the filmmakers and Summit who are working so hard to bring these movies to fruition to you in November 2011 and November 2012.
Please, for those who are posting, stop. And please, though the temptation is high, don’t view or pass on these images. Wait for the film in its beautiful, finished entirety to thrill you.
